After spending eight years in jail, a Nigerian televangelist accused of raping young women from his South African church has been found not guilty of all charges.

Timothy Omotoso had denied the 32 charges in a trial that was broadcast live and gained huge interest across the country.

In 2018, one witness told the court she had been raped by the pastor - who ran a church in the city of Port Elizabeth - when she was 14 years old.

When delivering the verdict on Wednesday, the judge presiding over the trial said that Mr Omotoso had been found not guilty because prosecutors had mishandled the case.

South Africa's National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) shared a similar assessment, saying that "former prosecutors in the case acted improperly and the accused were not sufficiently cross-examined by the state".

The NPA said it would now "consider its legal options" and that the drawn-out nature of the trial was partly down to Mr Omotoso filing numerous legal challenges.

For his part, Mr Omotoso told the media he thanked God for the verdict.

Hi co-accused, Lusanda Sulani and Zikiswa Sitho, were also found not guilty.

Mr Omotoso was dramatically arrested at an airport in 2017 as he sought to leave the country.

His trial was the first prominent rape case to be broadcast live in a country where sexual violence is rampant.

The hearings attracted huge interest, and raised difficult questions about victims' rights, impartiality and whether justice is best served by having television cameras in courtrooms.

Following Wednesday's verdict, Mr Omotoso will be deported to Nigeria, South African media outlet News24 reported.

The pains of suffering for a crime one never committed is always unbearable. But the joy of being proved innocent is always overwhelming. Though some people won't believe his innocence. To God be the glory.

One of the most important prayers a man can make in this life is to never fall into the hands of a deceitful woman.
Some will lie without shame accusing you of rap-e, pedophili-a, inces-t, or whatever atrocity crosses their mind in the moment. They’ll cry on command, twist stories, and drag your name through the mud until even your own children look at you with doubt and shame.

But what makes it worse… are the SIMPs.
Men who jump at the chance to be a woman's knight, no matter the facts. They don't need evidence oo. just a tear-stained face and a trembling voice. They'll defend her blindly, shame you publicly, and even raise their hand against you… all in the name of false chivalry.

There’s no justice in such madness.
So pray or wisdom, for discernment, and for protection from both the liar and the fool who defends her.

This is neither here nor there....the write up says he was acquitted because the prosecution mishandled the case. That doesn't sound good at all.

E no get wetin Nigerians with chochocho mouth neva talk on top this man mata.
It's easy to accuse men of rape and exonerate women accs 99% of the time.

As a boy, a grown up lady had raped me in the past. I was in primary 2 back then. She just slept by my side under the pretext of playing with me in the night,my mum wasn't with us. She put my thing inside of hers and I felt so irritated. There are several of such cases but men are always the victims.

Spot on!

He wasn't proven innocent, which doesn't speak well. We wish him grace. And for the supposed accs (victims) , I hope they lied, else, it's an injustice to them.

Exactly, They messed up their court processes or something. It doesn't mean he didn't do it. Just going to get away with it especially once he's deported.

I dont blame the female accs of sexual harassment, rape, etc.
Who I blame are those simplistic men that women who use sexual harassment and molestation laws to destroy their fellow men.
Just like you the Natasha, Funke Ashekun and accs of Tim Omotosho, so will people your accs when your time come.

As for me, we need stronger laws against sexual false accusations against men. We are losing men to these people who are looking for money to buy hair, do BBL and pose on instagram claiming small girl, big God.

Natasha accusation readily and easily comes to mind.
As old as the old testament is, its recommendations are still more valid than our current ways of determining false accusation in this instance.

Deu 22:24  Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour's wife: so thou shalt put away evil from among you.
Deu 22:27  For he found her in the field, and the betrothed damsel cried, and there was none to save her.

Your husband is right there in the room with over 20 other people, you did not talk, for over a year, then you come out to say rubbish without evidence. So called amazon that cannot be bullied, not some young underage girl cowered and so afraid to talk.
