He came to my chambers and sat for two hours waiting for me. That is how our relationship was,” Bwala narrated.

However, Bwala said things took a different turn after he met with the President on January 10, 2024. He claimed that was the moment Ndume became uncomfortable with his proximity to the seat of power.

“There is no record anywhere that I have ever had an issue with Ali Ndume until January 10, 2024, when I met with Mr President, and everything changed,” Bwala explained.

He alleged that Ndume began spreading false narratives about a supposed plot to replace him as Senator for Southern Borno District of Borno State.

“He started going about telling people that they wanted to replace him with me in Southern Borno because he could not get access to see the President,” Bwala stated. “He would go to media houses to speak about me. We would hold meetings and the rest.”

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has opened up about the genesis of his strained relationship with the Senator representing Borno South in the Senate, Mohammed Ali Ndume.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Sunday Politics’, monitored by our correspondent on Sunday night, Bwala recounted the history of their once cordial relationship and how it soured following his meeting with President Bola Tinubu in 2024.

“Ali Ndume and I were wonderful,” Bwala said. “When former Senate President Saraki was dealing with him, Ali Ndume came to me for help, and I played my part in ing him because he is a Senator from my district.”

Senator Ali Ndume has urged President Bola Tinubu to prioritise maintaining a strong relationship with former President Muhammadu Buhari, warning that Buhari’s influence in Northern Nigeria remains significant despite no longer being in office.

Speaking, Ndume said that while Buhari may have only one vote, his popularity among the Northern masses—especially the working class known as the Talakawas—should not be underestimated.

“Buhari’s followership has diminished naturally because it is different when you are not in power and after spending like eight years in power,” Ndume said. “Of course his popularity, everything has diminished, it is natural, but you can’t write him off especially with the Northern masses. The followership of Buhari has been occultic. You cannot explain it.

“If Buhari is coming here now, you will see people rushing to see. Everybody including those in the vegetable market will rush here. Buhari is still with the Talakawas.”

The senator’s comments come hours after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar led a delegation of opposition leaders to visit Buhari in Kaduna—a move that stirred speculation about shifting political alliances.

Ndume, who has been critical of the Tinubu istration, revealed he also plans to visit Buhari soon and emphasised the political weight the ex-president still carries.

“Tinubu should be worried if Buhari is not on his side,” he said. “Every number counts and Buhari has one vote. Tinubu should also be worried about my position. Because I have one vote for him. He does not have a vote for me.”

Ndume urged Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Nigeria’s security and economy sectors.

“Let the president forget about everything and concentrate on three things – security, welfare of citizens and economy,” he said.

“His attention should go there as number one, then he should create a state of emergency in those areas.”

Suggesting how the president should have handled the crisis in Rivers State, the lawmaker said: “I feel that the president would have worked seriously on bringing them and solving the problem rather than declaring a state of emergency. Call them, seat them down and say ‘go and sort your problem.’”

Jake Epelle, a prominent human rights activist and Executive Director of TAF Africa, has strongly condemned the recent appointment of s in the 23 local government areas of Rivers State, calling the move unconstitutional and an affront to the nation’s democratic principles. The appointments were made by Vice iral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (rtd), raising eyebrows across the state. Epelle, in an interview on Thursday, accused the state government of undermining the Nigerian Constitution.

“Rivers State people are smarter to know when people are trying to play on their intelligence. This is simply ‘Demo-crazy.’ What they are doing is further denigrating the constitution of Nigeria, which they swore an oath to uphold,” he said.

Epelle expressed disappointment at the appointment of Ibas, labeling him as “illegal” and questioning the motives behind the decision.

“I will not mince words to describe the so-called sole as illegal. His appointment is illegal. I think they are pushing us to the limit. Rivers people are resilient and peaceful, but this whole drama is becoming laughable and very unconstitutional,” Epelle remarked.

The human rights activist also raised concerns over the perceived lack of oversight, particularly from the National Assembly. He expressed bewilderment over why the legislature seemed to be allowing the situation to unfold without intervention.

“The instruction the president gave him was to make regulations. I don’t think that he was sent there to make appointments. Are they telling us that they plan to extend this so-called emergency rule, when there are many states that are calling for emergency rules and they are looking the other way?” Epelle asked, referring to what he described as an ongoing “rigmarole” aimed at undermining the peace and economic stability of Rivers State.

He also criticised the financial aspect of the istration’s activities, specifically questioning the proposed budget, which he believes is a tool for siphoning public funds.

“Look at the so-called budget that he wanted to present, I see it as a way of siphoning funds,” he added.

Furthermore in his remarks on the suspension of Rivers State Governor Fubara, Epelle questioned the sincerity of the federal government.

“Anyone who is in a responsible leadership position will say a thing and keep his word. What they are doing right now doesn’t look to me like suspension but removal. They should be bold enough to say that they don’t want the democratic systems and values that are attributed to Rivers State to continue.”

Epelle further warned about the potential consequences of these actions, drawing a parallel to the early stages of violent conflicts. “This is how genocide starts. The National Security Advisor needs to watch it. This is when to tell the president the truth. With the way things are going, it looks like they have deceived us to say suspension when they mean removal.”

Leaders of the opposition Labour Party on Wednesday marched to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Led by the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, the were received by INEC National Commissioner, Sam Olumekun.

They asked the electoral body to recognise Nenadi Usman as the LP chairman, days after the Supreme Court set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja recognising Abure as the National Chairman of the LP.

In a unanimous judgment last week, a five-member of the apex court held that the Court of Appeal lacked the jurisdiction to have pronounced Abure National Chairman of the LP, having earlier found that the substance of the case was about the party’s leadership.

The court allowed the appeal filed by Senator Ester Usman, and one other and held that it was meritorious before subsequently proceeding to dismiss the cross-appeal filed by the Abure faction of the LP for being unmeritorious.

Otti read out the Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court judgement as delivered by Justice Inyang Okoro.

“Consequent upon the foregoing, the decisions of both higher court and the court below recognize Barrister Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the first respondent and hereby set aside and suit number FXC is hereby struck out for want of jurisdiction,” Otti said.

“In the same vein, the first respondent, that is labour party under Abure, being an offshoot of the same judgement of the court is hereby dismissed. Before I am done, may I onish political parties and their to endeavour to always abide by their constitutions, rules, regulations and guidelines to guide them in choosing their officers as well as candidates?

“That way, incessant internal risks which always find their way to court should be reduced. If the constitution of a political party has prescribed duration for tenure of office of an officer such as this one, such officer should be humble enough to leave at the expiration of the tenure.

“In the final analysis, I find this appeal to be meritorious and is hereby allowed. The party shall bear their respective cost, appeal allowed. This is signed by Honorable Justice John Inyang Okoro, Justice of the Supreme Court.”
