President Bola Tinubu has arrived at the national assembly for the t sitting of the senate and house of representatives.

The president walked to the floor of the green chamber at exactly 11:50am.

Tinubu is expected to deliver his Democracy Day speech after addressing lawmakers.

On Wednesday, Tinubu, through the office of the secretary to the government of the federation (OSGF), cancelled the Democracy Day broadcast scheduled for 7am today due to his planned appearance at the national assembly.

The inter-ministerial committee on Democracy Day had earlier released the list of activities lined up for the celebration, in a statement issued by Abdulhakeem Adeoye, on behalf of the director of information and public relations.

Adeoye had noted that there would be no parade this year to mark the day.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Femi Gbajabiamila, chief of staff staff to the president; ministers and governors, accompanied the president to the chamber.

The president is also expected to confer national honours on some lawmakers.

Nigeria previously celebrated Democracy Day on May 29. However, that was changed in 2018.

In June 2018, former President Muhammadu Buhari declared June 12 as the new date for the commemoration of Nigeria’s democracy — to posthumously honour MKO Abiola, winner of the 1993 presidential election.

In his address welcoming Tinubu, Godswill Akpabio, senate president, harped on the need for executive-legislature collaboration, saying it is sacrosanct for the nation’s progress.
