President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday conferred national honours on several notable Nigerians as part of activities marking the 2025 Democracy Day celebrations, News360 Nigeria reports.

The announcement was made during his State of the Nation address at a t session of the National Assembly in Abuja.

Among the recipients was the late Kudirat Abiola, who was posthumously awarded the title of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) for her role in Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle. Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka was also conferred with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) in recognition of his enduring advocacy for justice and human rights.

Others honoured posthumously include Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, Ken Saro-Wiwa, and of the Ogoni Nine, who were executed in 1995 for their activism against environmental degradation in the Niger Delta.

In a historic move, President Tinubu also granted a presidential pardon to these late heroes.

“I shall also be exercising my powers under the prerogative of mercy to grant these national heroes a full pardon, together with others whose names shall be announced later in conjunction with the National Council of State,” Tinubu announced.

Many of those on the list are deceased. But it is better late to confer honours to those truly deserving of it than never. Especially people like Dr Amos Akingba.

A President that listens.

Glad he honored the fallen heroes too.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria

Meanwhile, I hope and pray he honors Obi and Atiku after winning 2027 election. They deserve to be recognized for enhancing opposition Politics in Nigeria.

Tinubu is very loved by majority and popular today because these opponents keeps him on his toes. Their constant criticism also fuels the developments we are all seeing. So, both of them deserve commendations even after losing the next election.

In 2012, under fuel subsidy, Benue State received about N6 billion per month from FAAC. That figure was approximately $40 million dollars, using $1/N150 rate.

Today in 2025, after subsidy removal, Benue State receives about N9 billion per month from FAAC. That figure is approximately $5 million dollars, using $1/N1800.

In real value, the FAAC given to states decreased by $35 million dollars despite fuel subsidy removal.

I trust some people will still come and wail on this thread. They are blinded by bitterness and can't see anything good around them.

All they want is bad news so they can dance like an insane person in the market square.

What did they use all that was given to them back then for? Nothing!

The real truth is the system is corrupt, acknowledge that and you’ll realize no single politician in 9ja right now can change anything, even those wey deh make mouth sef, once they get there, SOPE OtiLor.

This list awaken the forgotten tales of military brutality. Where people are being massacred simply for exercising their fundamental human rights.

May the souls of our democratic heroes rest in peace.

Dead people have families. Their families would be grateful for the honour.
It helps to heal.

Oh dear. Tinubu, by some of his actions lately - especially trying to turn Nigeria into a one-party dictatorship - has betrayed one and all who are named on this list. Chima Ubani and Bamidele Aturu will both be appalled & squirming in their caskets wondering what's going on with someone who pretended to be on their sides then but today embraces all the governance vices that they fought against.
