As Nigeria marks Democracy Day on June 12, 2025, a heated debate has resurfaced on social media regarding the involvement of prominent politician Peter Obi in the pro-democracy struggle following the annulment of the 1993 presidential election.

The controversy was sparked by a post from President Bola Ahmad Tinubu’s aide D. H. Bwala on X at 20:24 WAT on June 13, 2025, where he questioned Obi’s whereabouts during the critical period.

“Please can someone confirm to me whether it is true that on June 12, 1993 and weeks after that @PeterObi Peter Gregory Obi was in Malaysia or somewhere in Asia doing buying and selling trading business? I searched the internet to see any of his involvement in the struggle for democracy, I couldn’t see any link ohh.” Bwala wrote, accompanied by an image of Peter Obi.

The post has ignited a firestorm of reactions, with ers and critics alike weighing in. Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, addressed similar claims in a Daily Trust interview, stating,

“I was never directly involved either as an individual or with the NADECO activities of the June 12, 1993 annulled presidential election struggle.”

We have turned the internet upside down, we couldn't find any of his involvement. Obi was carrying files and making tea for his boss Abacha.

And why would anyone be bothered about Peter Obi involvement in democracy struggle, or would it add sense to Bwala's brain that has stopped functioning after ing APC

Sad it is a filthy-lucre seeking efulefus like this man who made a volte face to revert to a man he boldly told the world he taxed poor citizens to criminally amass wealth, rigged election among many other dirty pasts, that now insults the sensibility of people.

Infact, Obi and Daniel Kanu and many igbos fought vehemently against democracy. They should be awarded the prize of villains of democracy.

Obi was a baggage boy for Abacha. He is a thief who stole so much from Anambra, just the way Abacha taught him and is now using part of the loot for his regular politically-motivated charity.

And so?
Must we all be involved?
And who told you it's only those involved in the struggle that must be government officials?
In fact those that claimed to have fought for democracy during Abacha regime did so for their selfish interest. All they wanted was to stop Abacha so they can contest for a position and we're seeing that to be true right from the return of democracy in 1999. Not one them did that for the sake of the country but their own personal selfish interests.
Meanwhile, does Bwala think democracy just began in 1999? we have previously tasted that before it's truncation, did anyone ask him if he was among those that made the previous one happened? Very self-centered people .

So Obi was 'dining with Abacha'? At least he didn’t sneak behind closed doors begging Abacha for a commissioner post like your ‘democracy hero’ Tinubu. Funny how someone who ‘fought’ the military got rewarded with unexplained billions and a private hold on Lagos. Obi left wealth for his people while Tinubu took his people’s wealth for himself.

The likes of Obi, Nzeribe, Nwosu, Kanu and many other Igbos were all in bed with the Military.. is it their open tribalistic articles against Yorubas in the national dailies we should say or the court injunction against declaration of M.K.O Abiola as the winner of June 12, 1993 presidential elections or the one million man march for Abacha during the heat of June 12 struggle in Nigeria?.
If not for General Abdulsalam Abubakar that released Abacha's detainees on death row and willingly handed power back to civilian Government , only God knows the State Nigeria would have been today.

Don’t let Nigeria tire you, it’s our country, even if we travel far and near we will still come back home.
For Obi he should stop all these irrelevant press conferences if not he will just be doing more damage to himself than good. Let him strategise ahead of 2027 elections .

Obi is an opportunist who likes to eat where he did not sow. Imagine if Tinubu and others have acted the way Obi did would there be democracy today? Yes, now he is portraying himself a Saint after making money from the port management Job Abacha gave him. Very funny Guy!

Imagine if God did not create Nigeria, would Tinubu have seen anywhere to claim and pocketed as he did in Lagos and now Nigeria? Imagine if Awo and others did not fight for the independent of Nigeria, will Tinubu see where to come and shout it's his turn to be president? Tinubu is reaping where he did not sow. You think it's only you that knows something

And dipo diya, adisa, Anthony ani, olarenwaju, folurosho were the by standers under abacha. Buhari your god and saviour was a by stander at ptf. Oh I forgot yoruba traditional rulers got a limousine each under abacha. What of shofulu who aided Sgt Rogers in killing kudirat. He too was a by stander

The bolded is the main takaway from this entire issue!

I could have been deceived to believe this bullshit of Tinubus' 'sterling democratic credentials' and 'selflessness' had i not had the benefit of hindsight and seen his unfortunate antecedents in governance in Lagos and now Abuja, as well as his attitude towards democracy and the elctions that's it's bedrock! This attempt to launder his filthy image and present him as the 'selfless democratic saint' he's far from is one lie that can only be swallowed by the naive and uninformed!

Fighting against military rule is not the same as fighting for democracy.

Tinubu has employed dogs who bark at those who criticize against his government.
